Can You Really Say “It’s Impossible?”
Hey! I hope you’re having a great day!
I’m sitting in the Columbus Ohio airport still in awe of how much I’ve learned this weekend. I came up for an advanced class on identifying muscular problems and on intra-session problem solving taught by arguably the most skilled practitioner in the country.
I am amazed at some of the things I’ve seen.
I’m very excited to get home and start applying this, because I know it will make a huge positive impact in my body and in my clients bodies.
Being that I’m in Ohio and being that I’m a basketball fan, I couldn’t help but ask people how things have been since last Sunday when the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA Championship. The consensus has been that they are very happy about it and that the shock of it all made it epic and unforgettable.
Let me bring you up to speed if you don’t know what happened.
The city of Cleveland had a 52 year drought where none of their teams in any professional sport had won a championship. This was the worst such drought in pro sports.
The people of Cleveland have for a long time believed that they were cursed. They have had major economic problems and on top of that- major sports disappointments.
This year many in Cleveland expected a similar fate. Management spent a ton of money to load the team with stars but because there was one other team in the league that was so much better and so much more consistent than they were, many felt that it would be a wasted season.
The Cavs came into the playoffs having lost two games in the regular season to this team, The Golden State Warriors, each by double digit deficits. This was the team they couldn’t beat last year in the finals and the consensus was that they wouldn’t beat them this year either.
The Warriors finished with the best regular season record of all time, racking up 73 wins. Everyone else looked like a high school JV team compared to them.
Once the Cavs made it to the finals, the only question in most peoples minds was “how many games will it take for the Warriors to win the title again?”
The first two games were embarrassing for the Cavs. A 15 point loss was followed by a 33 point loss and it only seemed like it would get worse.
After winning one game and then losing another, the Cavs were down 3-1. A deficit that no team in NBA Finals history had ever came back from to win.
Imagine the mindset of these guys.
They lose 3 games badly to the best team in NBA history, creating a deficit that nobody had ever came back from. All the media is counting you out, the fans are in doubt and it seems like all the odds are against you.
Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever felt that you had a problem, a challenge, a diagnosis, an ailment or something else that seems insurmountable? Maybe you felt like you were completely inept at the task of trying to overcome this thing. Maybe nobody you knew had ever overcome this problem before. Maybe it left you feeling hopeless and wanting to give up.
I know I’ve been there.
Well, if you follow basketball, you know what happened next.
The Cavs won 3 straight games, became NBA Champions, ended the longest citywide championship drought in pro sports and finally broke the Cleveland curse.
I know it’s just a game. I know that at the end of the day it doesn’t REALLY mean a whole lot. But what I also know is that it shows what can happen if you don’t give up hope despite having all the cards stacked against you.
I don’t know about you, but things like this give me hope. Things like this make me realize that the belief of what can or can’t happen only exists in the mind. Even if something has NEVER been done before- that doesn’t mean that it never will.
For 50 years people thought that a 4 minute mile was an impossible task. Then in 1954 Roger Bannister did it. Guess what else? 6 weeks after Roger did it, someone else did it too. Things only seem impossible until someone does them. Maybe that someone will be you.
Even if you have no athletic endeavors that you are pursuing, maybe there is something that you are trying to accomplish or some challenge you are trying to overcome. I’m here to tell you that as long as you don’t lose hope and you keep pushing forward, the things that seem impossible can become possible.
Thanks for letting me be on the journey with you.
Now go out there and go for it!! You deserve it!
