You Might Be Surprised at What Is In Your Indoor Air..

These days, most of us are thinking about air quality much more than we used to. As we’ve heard experts talk about how germs travel through the air, I think we’ve all become a bit more conscious of the fact that we need to be intentional about which air we choose to breathe.

However, as much as this current situation is making us scrutinize the air quality based on whether it might have germs or not, we must also realize that there are many other things in indoor air that can be harmful as well.

I came across an article about this topic earlier today by Dr. Joseph Mercola M.D. Dr. Mercola has the Number 1 Natural Health website on the internet and has been publishing since 1997. Here is his introduction to this article:

“You are immersed in an ocean of air every minute of the day, whether you are running a marathon or asleep in your bedroom. Your health depends on the continuous balance of inspiration and expiration, the delicate exchange of gases between you and Earth’s atmosphere.

According to a study by the California EPA, every man, woman and child exchanges between 10,000 and 70,000 liters of air every 24 hours, just to sustain life. With this kind of dependence, I don’t have to tell you how important the physical and chemical properties of your air must be. At that rate, day in and day out, even very minute levels of airborne toxins pose significant health concerns. And yet, air quality is often overlooked, compared to concerns about what’s in your food and water.

There was a time, long ago, when humans spent most of their time outside. But today, of course, this is not the case. The average person spends 90 percent of his time inside buildings, as his needs have evolved from chasing down antelope to tracking investment opportunities on the Internet.

Unfortunately, indoor air is far more polluted than outdoor air. According to the EPA, indoor air contains 2 to 5 times more contaminants—and on occasion, as much as 100 times more. As stated by WebMD, indoor air pollution is one of the most serious environmental threats to your health, yet no agency can regulate it, and few studies have been done about its effects on your health.

This report will provide you with some facts about what can be present in the air inside your home, the health dangers those contaminants pose to you and your children (and your pets), and what you can do about it.”

In the article he mentions that things like asthma, allergies, headaches, eye and skin irritations, sore throats, colds, flus, memory loss, dizziness, fatigue and depression can all be affected by indoor air quality.

He gives details about a 2009 EPA study that found that ordinary homes may have up to 586 different harmful chemicals in the air.

He lists the 12 most common types of pollutants in the home and where they come from.

He explains why energy efficient buildings often have worse air quality than regular buildings.

He explains the different approaches to air purification and the different types of air purifiers.

He reveals a way to substantially improve your air quality for free in about 15-20 minutes a day.

He lists 14 other things you can do to improve your air quality.

And he gives references for all his data.

Also, I highly encourage you to subscribe to his newsletter because he is my most trusted online source for holistic health information. As a side note, his articles on COVID-19 are extremely informative, helpful, hopeful and not diluted by any outside pressures. If you search his site you’ll find many of those as well.

Also, if you’re looking for a high quality and inexpensive air purifier, I use the Germ Guardian HEPA Filter with UV Light. It sucks air in, filters it with the HEPA filter, kills germs with the UV light, and then releases it back out. I currently have it running in my home office where I see clients and I know it works by how dirty the filter gets after just a few months of use. When I change the filter, it sure makes me glad that all that stuff wasn’t in the air that we were breathing!
